Artist's Statement:
My work has been involved for a long time with decoration - patterns and trompe l'oeil - and how it brings associations and memories we may not even know we have. At the same time, the still life format, in the way it depicts the three-dimensional on a flat surface, has been my lifelong pursuit. Taken together, these two directions offer opportunities for combining different traditions into a modern interpretation of realism. I use acrylic paint for all my work, in order to take advantage of both its transparency in washes, and its opacity for showing objects in still life. Sometimes I use layers of different ground colors and sand them back to encourage the transparent and antique effects.
