Born in Seattle, Amy Bouse studied at the Sorbonne, returning to the United States to take a BA in Literature from UC/San Diego, an MA in Comparative Literature and in 1995, a BFA in Photography from the University of Washington at Seattle. While working as a photographer at the University of Washington, her interest in narrative and image lead to her to painting, which she pursued independently, attending the Studio School of Santa Monica. Currently, Bouse teaches Drawing, Painting, Art Appreciation and Advanced Placement Art at the high school level while she continues to show her work nationally.
Her work explores psychological states and the process of extracting these states from their subterranean territory. This transportation often results in half-written messages and abrupt transitions; the passage remains visible on the surface of the paintings.
