Spirits of the Waters 39”x 87” 2003 Acrylic
Peoples of the Southwest Pacific Islands could gain protection from spirits through painting their faces with stripes, marking their rib lines with white clay, or wearing a fiercely scowling dance mask. Masks, objects, and figures were made for display during rituals related to fishing for impressing the supernatural spirits of the waters.
