Illuminated Paintings

John Fathom uses a combination of fluorescent lights and acrylic paint on a smooth Plexiglas surface. The ambiguous forms seem to pull directly from the observer’s unconscious through twists and turns of paint and metamorphosis of color. Each illuminated piece enriches any dim lit or darkened environment. The work captures the feeling that you are looking into a singular moment, where entire worlds are collapsing into one another.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is meant to dropkick your imagination and send you swirling into my world;
The world that exists beneath every surface and lives between Chaos and Order.
The intention is to enrich a darkened environment and command your attention.

I use a variety of scraping tools and my fingers to create the lavish microcosms
of light and color in each piece. It is then mounted on a backlit surface to allow
the light to envelop and expose the colors true essence. Electronic music plays an integral part in the creation of each piece, I allow the beats and patterns to channel through my movements and strokes across the surface. If you see faces, insects, creatures or cities in my work then your heading in the right direction. The work is meant to draw on your subconscious, entice your creativity and inspire you to look deeper.
