ARTIST STATEMENT

My recent work has moved from 'figurative expressionism' towards figurative imagery influenced by my experience in design and sculpture. I use an abbreviated form in my art: an abstraction of the figure. I use imagery borrowed from past eras and cultures which are 'pedestrian or vulgar' in the original use of the word. The dust and grit of the past appeal to my sense of what is 'real'. I use an overlay of various imagery to create a personal view into human basic emotions, woven from the past into the future. I use mixed media with acrylic and oil to achieve this. I love both texture and pattern held together with a strong influence of line in my work. If I stop drawing I cannot see.
