Lance Leonhardt
From portraits of big animals met in the wild, to primal forms gathered within; artist Lance Leonhardt sees painting as a way of enlarging his experiences:
"Painting lets me interpret what I encounter, and provides an opportunity to create visual reflections of life forms in their environment."
These environments include places like Galapagos, Palau, Rangiroa, Aitutaki and the Azores. As a teacher of Ecology and Bioethics, and writer on environmental issues for Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine, Lance values the insights and understanding real-life contact brings to his work:
"Everything in nature has a spirit, appearance and significance that, although interconnected, is unique to itself. Feeling that uniqueness on a personal level is valuable to me when physically transforming paint into a meaningful image."
Prefering a water-based medium, utilizing a gradual build-up of thinly pigmented washes in his paintings, Lance combines Liquitex acrylic paints with gel medium and gloss medium & varnish. Liquitex Gesso is often used as a painting base on linen, canvas, and masonite.
