Paint Exchange Recipients 1996

Following are the latest winners of the Liquitex Paint Exchange Program. Our selection jury thought that they had good ideas and as the work is completed it will be hung in the Liquitex Art Gallery.

Evan plans on creating a series of four oil paintings depicting allegorical domestic scenes based on historical themes.

Cerese Vaden, Utah state University

Cerese would like to create a 3' x 5' piece depicting myths that are indigenous to each continent.

Anthony Santagati, Howard University
Instructor: Dr. Floyd Coleman, Chairman, Visual Arts Department
Anthony will paint five 30" x 40" self portraits highlighting different aspects of the same person. Each piece will be an evolution of the previous piece.

Walter Zausch, University of Kentucky
Instructor: Jerry Rosenberg
Walter plans to transform a series of P. Uccello paintings onto 6' x 10' canvasses showing the relationship between the flattened perspectiives Uccello presents and their impact on 20th century art.

Carolyn Brown, Ohio University

Carolyn would like to create a painting of 4' x 4' panels each containing a different underlying image which concerns existance in today's society.

Victor plans to creat a triptych mural entitled "Circle of Life" which will contain color schemes combined with his biomorphic abstract style.

Adam will work with Liquitex acrylic paints to create a painting depicting the head of Bob Marley floating in the air above a pair of hands playing the guitar.

Jennifer will create a 6' x 8 ' collage on paper and mixed media using Liquitex acrylic paints and mediums. The multidimensional theme depicts the fragility of a child who plays with nature.

Annie plans to create a series of ten 6' x 6' post-painterly abstract paintings which will be sporadically layered with realistic imagery and abstractions.

Donna will paint a series of 6' x 3' screens depicting cave paintings utilizing different Liquitex mediums to simulate cave walls.

Erica Dawn Hough, University of Nebraska at Kearney

Erica will create a series of ceramic pieces centered around a nature theme.

Thomas E. Sanford, Columbia University - College of Arts and Sciences

Thomas plans to create a 10 panel series depicting memory in a 2 dimensional format possibly using image fragmentation and layering.

David M. Debus, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena
Instructor - Mark Strictland and Vince Robbins
David plans to use Liquitex oil paint to illustrate a humorous book he has written on the 10 worst day of his life.

Peter Brunet, University of Florida, Gainesville
Instructor - Tony Shipp
Peter is interested in American "action painters" of the 40's and 50's such as Pollack and deKooning. He will incorporate a trampoline in his piece to illustrate a direct correlation between the elastic movements of his body and the resulting fantasy landscape.

Jeffrey Allen Mendenhall, Florida State University, Tallahassee
Instructor - Tom Anderson, Professor, Art Education
Jeffrey will use Liquitex Structural Paints and other acrylics to create a 32" x 62" canvas illustrating how color and form can create emotional artwork.

Maggie Butler, Art Institute of Chicago
Instructors - Gayleen Gerber, Mary Zelaney, Richard Loving
Maggie will create a piece linking images between the conscious and unconscious mind utilizing collage and transfer techniques.

Yecenia Rivera, Southern Connecticut State University
Instructor - Mrs. Maconnel
Yecenia plans to create a 5' x 5' painting utilizing Liquitex acrylic paint to illustrate her experiences as a half black/half Puerto Rican female growing up in New York.

OCOTBER 1996


Patrick J. Moran, Ohio University
Patrick plans to create five 3' x 4' canvases that will become one piece of horizontal artwork. Painted in Liquitex acrylic paint, the proposed work is entitled Just a Couple of Days, depicting a childhood experience centering on the concept of time.

Lari R. Gibbons, University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Lari will create pieces of artwork with Liquitex Acrylic paint that are combined with the formal qualities of ambiguous imagery that suggest a sense of timelessness and mystery to the viewer.

Herman Kao, Simon Fraser University, B.C.
Herman plans to paint a 20" x 30" painting using Liquitex acrylic paints. The subject of the painting will be an image on one side of the canvas reflected in a mirror on the opposng side of the canvas.

Melissa Crawford, State Univerisity of West Georgia
Juggling Act is the title of Melissa's proposed painting. A whimsical mood is envisioned by Melissa for her two 20' x 16" canvases of a juggling jester.

John Calhoun, University of Kentucky
John plans to create a musical composition on a 12' x 20' canvas with Liquitex acrylic paint. The surrealistic style of painting will challenge the viewer to escape in the painting as if in a musical experience.

Jesse McLin, Pacific Union College
Jesse's planned series of 24" x 36" paintings will focus on common every day middle class American lifestyle. The paintings will be created in vibrant colors using an extreme foreshortening technique.

Michael McKay, University of Kentucky
Exploring a common relationship between painting and architecture, Michael plans to pursue this idea with his Liquitex acrylic paint.

Keiko Suda, Cuesta College
Keiko plans to create a 4' x 8' spiritual, dreamlike painting experimenting with his Liquitex paints and mediums.

Timothy Lane Johnson, St. Mary's College of Maryland
Timothy will paint a series of five 36" x 48" canvases reflecting comic art. The subject of his series focuses on a real-life experience as an art student this summer in Connecticut.

Elizabeth Schlegel, Maryland Institute, College of Art
Elizabeth plans to paint 14" x 18" illustrations of a children's book she recently wrote.

Jeff Mendenhall, Florida State University
Jeff will paint a 48" x 48" canvas that will focus on color, geometrical shapes and textures appealing to the emotions and senses of the viewer.

SEPTEMBER 1996


Sarah Kaput, St. Mary's College of Maryland
Sarah plans to create a series of four 2' x 3' canvases with Liquitex acrylic paints depicting two towns of personal significance. Her paintings will serve as a diary of her experiences growing up in these two communities.

Carey McDougall, Wesleyan University
Carey's 3' x 11' horizontal mixed media painting, using Liquitex acrylic paints and mediums with fabric, will depict women's dresses blowing on a clothesline.

Nina Rizzo, University of Illinois
Themes of domestic life, through fictional childhood tales, will influence Nina's four 6' x 6' canvases created with Liquitex acrylic paints. Nina's painting style is highly influenced by the imagery and colors of post-modern painters.

Loretta Bogdanowicz, The University of Arizona
Loretta plans to paint a 48" x 36" painting focusing on the preservation of family heritage. Family roots will be depicted as colorful, tubual forms within a landscape.

Crystal Lynn Cole, Sheperd College
Crystal plans to create a series of six paintings on a sculpted canvas with Liquitex acrylic paints and mediums. Crystal's unique method of stretching canvas to form folds, enhanced with applications of paints and mediums, lend themselves to her creation of ethereal-style landscapes.

AUGUST 1996


Jay Tomson, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
Experience as an exchange student at the Utrecht School of Art in the Netherlands will be the focus of Jay's abstract 6' x 10' acrylic painting.

Jane Thompsett, Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design
Jane plans to paint a series of 6'x 5' hemmed panels of unstretched canvas. Experimenting with color and texture, the series of paintings will focus on female athletes.

Jack O'Brien, Edison Community College
"Allegro, Ma Non Molto" is the title of Jack's proposed 24" x 48" Liquitex acrylic painting of opera singer Maria Callas, as seen after a performance. Jack plans to enter his painting in an October competition at his college.

Brionna Newton, Southwestern Oregon Community College
Brionna plans to create a 36" x 48" Liquitex acrylic painting in a surrealistic style.

Heath Seymour, Western Kentucky University
Heath proposes to create a 5' x 8' mixed media canvas. An encaustic effect will be attempted using various layers of Liquitex acrylic paint on several 12" x 20" canvas squares. The squares will then be placed on the larger canvas to be part of a collage.

Naysan McIlhargey, Earlham College
A family portrait will be the subject of Naysan's 5' x 5' canvas.

Vanessa K. Johnson, Southern Connecticut University
"Growing a culturally aware garden" will be the title of Vanessa's series of five 48" x 60" Liquitex acrylic paintings.

Justin Kay, Messiah College
Justin will paint several large visual interpretations of music in an expressionistic style on canvas.

V.J. Rodriguez, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena
V.J. proposes to create a series of figure studies of 30" x 40" paintings in a storyboard format using Liquitex acrylic paints.

Bill Paylor, University of Arizona
The Sonoran Desert and its changing moods will be the subject of Bill's series of five 36" x 48" paintings.

Bernadette Phan, Tyler School of Art
Influenced by Byzantine mosaic art, Bernadette proposes to paint a mural made of small-scale 8" x 8" square paintings working in abstract design.

Joyce Bettencourt, University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth
Joyce plans to create a series of three, 24" x 36" autobiographical paintings

Glenn Szegedy, University of New Hampshire
Glenn proposes to combine the classical ideas of the Renaissance painters with his contemporary painting style on a 48" x 32" canvas.

Michelle Edwards, McMaster University
Michelle will use Liquitex® acrylic paints and mediums on the surface of a series of clay figures. She will achieve finishes that resemble wood, metals and marble on her statuary.

Eric Drummond Smith, Emory and Henry College
Eric will create a series of paintings based on the characters created by Lewis Carroll's books, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass."

Jean Aukerman, Edison Community College
Jean's acrylic, abstract painting will interpret a broad range of human emotions ranging from happiness and surprise, to fear and sadness.

Kyle Kinsella, St. Mary's College
Kyle will spend the summer painting in New York City's Central Park. Influenced by the landscape paintings of Baltlhus, Kyle plans to create textural effect with Liquitex paints and mediums.

Molly Jo Kolaski, Northern Michigan University
Molly Jo proposes to create a series of 2" x 3" paintings of the rocky north shoreline of Lake Superior and other inland wilderness lakes of northern Michigan.

Wendy Bradbury, Northwest College of Art
Wendy will design and build a mailbox using Liquitex acrylics and airbrush to complete her unique design project.

Eli Chaim Neugeboren, Ohio University
Eli will do a series of four paintings using four different Hebrew words that mean "create" relating to four different types of creation. Imagery in the paintings will relate to the words, with the words written in calligraphy.

Jean Cress, Columbia Community College
Wooded areas in the Sierra foothills, scenic lakes and rock formations that inspire Jean, will be the focus of her 16" x 20" canvas paintings.

Joy Kloman, University of Florida
Dancing people will be the subject of Joy's painting. She will create movement and rhythm with paint on canvas.

Bea Linder, Northeast Louisiana University
Bea's series of paintings will focus on differences in color.

Mohanpal Singh Dulai, Wright University
Mohanpal has ideas for three paintings ranging from action ideas to nature scenes.

Tracy Skinner, University of Arizona
Tracy will paint to create a series of five 30" x 40" studies of homeless veterans.

William Jason Coomes, University of Kentucky
William will paint a 10' x 30' canvas mural depicting the ever-changing quality of nature. Upon completion, the mural will be mounted on a old tobacco barn in rural Kentucky.

Bunthaeun C. Ouk, University of Wisconsin
Bunthaeun's subject matter will be the human figure in an odyssey world. His painting style is influenced by science fiction and post modernism.

Dede Farrar, University of South Dakota
Dede will paint a series of paintings based on photographs of people and places in the Black Hills of South Dakota taken by her grandfather during 1900-1930. She plans to interpret the subject matter using texture and color in a modern Impressionistic style.

Richard Fett, Florida State University
Richard is painting a series of rads painted with Liquitex acrylic paint on stretched 3' x 4' canvases.

Kendra Wadsworth, Virginia Commonwealth University
Kendra's imaginary characters will be the subject of a series of 4' x 7' acrylic paintings on brown craft paper prepared with gesso. The paper then will be adhered to stretched canvas upon completion.

Timothy Lonergan, Maryland Institute of Art
Timothy is inspired by a masterpiece seen at a Baltimore art museum and plans to create an original piece of art that is influenced by the masters.

Michelle Wasson, University of Illinois
Michelle plans to create two 6' x 9' paintings on stretched canvas that will focus on beauty, style and grace. Her subject matter is influenced by the 1940's and 1950's.

Melody Aleene Ouderkirk, Valencia Community College
Melody will explore the theme of abstracted doorways of pure color that invites the viewer to choose a path. She will create her idea on two 44" x 56" panels.

Timothy Carlson, Calvin College
Inspired by spring, Timothy will interpret gnarled old apple trees coming to renewed life using bold, loose, representational brush strokes on three 30" x 30" canvases.

Chris Hamer, University of New Orleans
Chris will paint a series of 3' x 3' paintings of melancholic control devices, such as remote controls, cordless phones, mouses, etc., on grids of actual computer floppy disks.

Sze-Lin Lie, University of Bridgeport
Sze-Lin will create a traditional seascape painting with Liquitex acrylic paints on a 5' x 3' canvas.

Neil Burcham, East Tennessee University
Neil will paint a mural on the wall of the Campus Ministry House. He will interpret social events occurring at this facility on the mural using an impressionistic painting technique.

Roman Richards, Tidewater Community College
Roman's plan is to paint three seascapes in n impressionistic style on canvases in sizes ranging from 18" x 24" to 30" x 36".

Bryn Anne Smith, University of Idaho
A portrait, painted on a 20" by 24" canvas with Liquitex StructuralTM Paints and Liquitex paints, will be the subject of Bryn Anne's art project.

Adam Christian Murdoch, Rocky Mountain College
Adam's painting will focus on the topic of Alzheimer's Disease and its emotional impact and resulting life changes experienced by family members. Imagery within the painting will consist of visual representations of Alzheimer's Disease victims and text related to their lives.

Danielle Sterken, Calvin College
Danielle will use Liquitex paints on 3' x 4' masonite panel to interpret the conflict between good and evil using a biblical passage as a reference.

Glen Kessler, St. Mary's College of Maryland
Glen will paint a series of ten 2' x 3' paintings of various spots in Washington, DC. His subject matter is influenced by his environment and springtime.

Jesse Chang, Messiah College
Jesse will paint five canvases that reflects his experiences with people he met and places he visited during a recent semester in China.

John Holdway, Jr. Maryland Institute, College of Art
John will create a 6' x 12' triptych depicting his interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Elaine Lari-Cheung, International Correspondence School
The topic of harmony will be created on Elaine's 18" x 24" painting using Liquitex acrylic paints in a watercolor technique.

Jay Dertinger, University of Ohio
Jay will create a close-up view of rusty machines, old gears, etc. using Liquitex acrylic and Liquitex StructuralTM paints on a 2' x 3' canvas.

Frederick Reese, Colgate University
Frederick will create ten 18" x 24" paintings illustrating the major plots of a novella he is writing. His paintings will communicate the written story in a dimension that is unique to visual expression

Becky Hill, Cowley County Community College
Becky will create a 3' x 3' sculpted piece of art using Liquitex® acrylic paints to create a 3-dimensional effect.

APRIL 1996


James L. Newsome, Tyler School of Art
James plans to do a 6' x 5' painting representing human rights for all individuals. He will especially focus on fairness and justice for all children.

John Dilworth, Weber State University
John will use his Liquitex paint to finish a series of paintings entitled, "The Adventures of Edwin Tolmer." He uses acrylic paint as a bonding medium for his mixed media collages. Paint encompasses the major areas of his work and serves as a transition for cloth and photos placed on the canvas.

Phoebe Erin Bogert, Pitzer College
Phoebe plans to paint a mural on a church wall facing a garden where homeless men, their facilitator and local students work together. In an attempt to connect the local community, her mural will portray people of all ages and races working together in a garden communicating the value of a united effort.

Clint Taniguchi, University of Hawaii, Manoa
Fascinated with the versatility of acrylic paints and their ability to stain raw canvas, Clint will use this technique to create a Manoa landscape of greenery or a portrait. He plans to incorporate layers of transparent gels and mediums on his final piece of artwork.

Max Clifford, University of Kansas
Using the traditional still life as a reference point, Max will study the still life and find inspiration to create three interesting 30" x 30" canvases.

Colette Briere, Georgia Southern University
Colette plans to create a series of five paintings on stretched canvas or jute using bold brushwork and thick layers of paint. She will attempt to transform traditional religious imagery to depict contemporary events in the lives of humans.

Christopher Minechello, University of Texas, Pan American
Christopher will create an 18" x 24" magnification of chromatic species of a beetle executed on a clay surfaced panel. Using the Liquitex acrylic range of iridescent and opalescent paints, he will create a unique, textural effect, completing his work with layers of gloss medium.

Wendy Olson, University of River Falls
Wendy proposes to use Liquitex acrylics on her three-dimensional piece of artwork. The theme of her work is a quilt with representational family portraits. She will paint the images on glass, transfer them onto fabric and build up the images with paint and gloss medium.

Reina Zeda, New York City College
Reina's painting will serve as a vehicle to express her experiences of living with a physical disability. Her artwork will interpret emotions and obstacles surrounding her experiences in her daily life.

Jeff Rathermel, University of Minnesota
Jeff plans to interpret spiritual experiences reported by six Bosnian children and will incorporate the country's history from 1981 to present day in his paintings. His works will be painted on handmade paper using Liquitex whites, blues and silver grays.

Inara Cedrins Sander, School of the Art Institute
Inara will paint three, 3-panel folding screens with Egyptian motifs with Liquitex acrylic paint. Images for her work were gathered in a recent art field study program in Egypt.

Mark Poteat, East Tennessee State University
Mark proposes to create four horizontal panels that each represent the four movements of a symphony. The images will be personal icons arranged in a lively and active manner using color and texture to create a visual symphony.

Joyce Parkerson, Northern Louisiana University
Joyce plans to create two mixed media paintings with acrylic paints and mediums on canvas using an impasto technique. Planned subject matter for her painting will be cats and a landscape.

Jeremy deVine, Maryland Institute, College of Art
Jeremy will explore color relationships in his series of paintings. The surface of his paintings will be primed with many thin layers of gesso to create a textural surface. This surface will be glazed with many layers of paint. When dry, the surface will be rubbed to create a blended effect.

Lionel Plummer, Wilkes University
Lionel will paint an abstract mural on the wall of his home. He looks forward to exploring the use of Liquitex acrylic paints in an expressionist style.

Jim Vogel, Tidewater Community College
A surrealistic view of the desert, with a bright blue sky and full billowing clouds are envisioned by Jim for his project. His painting will include various subject matter that will challenge the viewer and add to his surrealistic painting style.

Jenny Wilson, Maryland Institute, College of Art
Jenny is working on a series of paintings for a show entitled "Breathing Lessons". Her paintings are inspired by her association with water imagery. She uses a combination of acrylics, gel, gloss and matte mediums to create the gesture of water following gravity.

Jeff Garrett, et. al., The University of Michigan, Flint
On behalf of his Mural Painting Class, Jeff's proposal is for he and his class members to paint a mural on the walls of the new science building using Liquitex acrylic paints. The class will first design the mural, and as a group, will collaboratively paint the mural.

Curtis R. Benally, Weber State University
An emerging Navajo student artist, Curtis plans to depict and narrate oral stories from his native culture onto an 8' x 12' mural painting.

Wayne Adams, Calvin College
Wayne plans to paint 5' square paintings of the edges of woods and nature preserves near Calvin College and a local summer camp. The paintings will depict sunrises and sunsets breaking through the trees and foliage.

Kelly Parvin, Maryland Institute, College of Art
Kelly plans to do a series of 16"x 20" paintings of images created from abstract bird cage designs using metallic and bold colored paints on canvas.

Chad Ferber, Ohio University
Chad plans to use representational form and a limited palette to create images from the church on 1'x 4' canvases.

George Thompson, St. Mary's College of Maryland
George will do a 6'x 4' abstract painting of an interior space that represents spatial sensations.

Steve Riley, University of Illinois
Steve's 3'x 3' impasto-style painting will explore the physicality of paint through experimentation using various textural techniques.

Dan Benson, University of Northern Iowa
Dan plans to paint a series of four, 6'x 10' paintings of a local performing arts center depicting various evens of the changing four seasons of the year.
