Paint Exchange Recipients 2000

Following are the latest winners of the Liquitex Paint Exchange Program. Our selection jury thought that they had good ideas and as the work is completed it will be hung in the Liquitex Art Gallery.

STUDENT PAINT EXCHANGE AWARD - Acrylic A 750

Becky will complete 10-12 small scale paintings, using Degas' BATHERS series as inspiration for a series of nudes. She is interested in this topic as an exploration of women's role in the nude throughout Art History, particularly from the perspective of feminist scholarship. "I want to see how this series of bathers might be interpreted differently when painted by a woman. Will their images be less objectified? Can a woman painter capture the feeling of these private moments in a different way than a man?"

Monica is working on her senior solo show, exploring the use of body painting in apply paint to canvas. She hangs large pieces of canvas on the wall, smears paint on her body and presses it onto the canvas to create images. She plans to incorporate various textures into the paint. Monica's idea is to create self-portraits using colors to show feeling and expression. She plans to create about 20 large canvases, some stretched and hung on the wall, others hung from the ceiling around the gallery.

STUDENT PAINT EXCHANGE AWARD - Acrylic B 1000

Students will select a work from a Master that painted during the Renaissance. The student will do study sketches to help them understand how the Master created the work. The students will then attempt to recreate the painting. After the reproduction is complete the students will create their own paintings in the style of the Renaissance with contemporary themes.

Diana's advanced placement studio class plans to design and paint an outside wall mural for their high school. The theme will be the South Florida environment, incorporating class research into the styles of the old masters.

Cris plans a series of approximately 100 paintings based on the collection of beetles found at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. Her paintings this past year have been investigating patterns found in nature and she finds the patterns on these beetles to be most intriguing. The project will involve painting a symmetrical portion of each beetle on a small canvas, 5 inches by 7 inches. Her vision is to paint at least 100 of the over 300.000 beetles found in the world. The final display will be a large wall filled with the colors and textures found on these interesting creatures.

For the past two years Jessica has worked with portraiture in a surrealistic approach that is influenced by graffiti artwork and music. She plans to bring separate canvases together retaining their identity while unifying them through color and painted collage imagery. Jessica will use twelve 12x12 inch canvases to construct a 4x3 foot finished piece and take on the challenge of painting collage in a grid format.

Sarah plans to paint her Oregon Suite. It consists of 4 pieces of furniture, which she's collected from yard sales. She has cleaned, rough-sanded and primed the pieces, which are now ready to become the basis to express her view of Oregon's bounty.

Sarah is using a straight back chair, a large, shaker-style bench, a small table and a 4-legged stool. When painted, they will reflect her favorite places in Oregon. The Columbia River Table will represent the dam and a precisely colored coho salmon, water (blues, reds, silver, white, greens). The Doug Fir Bench will have legs painted with realistic bark, detail of fir needles, 1950's style red log truck loaded with old growth wood (brown, blue, yellow, green). The Blackberry Stool will have painted vines with flowers twining up & around each leg, perfectly realistic fresh blackberry pie on seat (glossy purples, blues greens). A Willamette Valley Agricultural Chair will represent late summer hay harvest fields & grasses and a Western Meadowlark perched on a tree branch on the chair back (yellows, oranges, browns).

Megan has been experimenting with painting on floor carpets. The dramatic undulation of colors on the carpet reminds her of the work of Caravaggio, whom she greatly admires. She will use her Liquitex materials grant to paint a carpet six feet in length and five feet in height. It will be a figurative painting that follows along the lines of Caravaggio's dramatic style. Megan has been compiling photographs and thumbnail sketches, awaiting the chance to bring them idea to life. Go to it!

Yvonne will work on a trio of 18''x24'' paintings dealing with the sources and nature of concepts concerning mental and physical health. She will explore these areas by pairing images of the body, food, and articles used for adornment. They will be rendered in a classical style that draws attention to the inherent beauty of the subject, with text that points to questions and at times radically denounces codified means of evaluating them.

JUNE 2000


Audrey Butler, Montgomery College
Audrey will be using the Deluxe Intro 250 to explore the endless possibilities of bas-relief.. Color will play an important role, as well as texture, and surface sheen. Audrey plans to construct each relief in a 6 X 6" format, each panel having holes allowing all panels to be attached to one another with metal rings. She has been extensively studying the works of the late artist Eva Hesse. Hesse, which was based on addition, and repetition of form. Both of these concepts are important factors in Audrey’s exploration. "I want to be able to create a relief that posseses an endless number of possibilities; it can be added to , subtracted from, and moved around (the panels can be datached, as the metal rings open and close". Chandra Brooks, Parson's School of Design
Chandra will use the Acrylic A 750 package for a series of 3 lifesize self-portraits. The theme, inspired by Botticelli's Primavera, will be the continuation of a series of personal iconography collages that Chandra has been working on. The project will also involve working on rubber, glass, wood, and lifesize body molds. Acrylic A 750

APRIL 2000


We Gonzalez, University of Illinois -Champaign
We Gonzalez is working on a series of current event documentary paintings. Each involves current issues and historical references. He's mostly looking at how history repeats itself and how it occurred in different societies. The paintings will use a variety of techniques, focusing on color and texture. He layers images and colors almost like a collage. The color is used to aid in developing emotional connections to the paintings. As a teacher, he uses many of his paintings as examples for his students and feels that artwork should be used not only for esthetics but for education. Acrylic B 1000.

MARCH 2000


Sergio Bahamondes, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA
Sergio will use his Acrylic B 1000 grant for a project called, "old masters up to date". He is studying several masters and their techniques to duplicate their paintings in his own style. Sergio uses models to pose in the same way as in the paintings. The models will wear contemporary clothing and some elements of technology will be added to the painting. Acrylic B 1000

FEBRUARY 2000


Roberta Delgado, University of New Mexico
The Acrylic B 1000 package will help Roberta in her celebration of 21st century Mexican artists. Using the many colors that permeate her Mexican heritage, Delgado will be staging a show entitled "A Resting Place For A Secret Fiesta." It will feature old wooden chairs, each designed to represent the personality and style of a contemporary Mexican artist. Diego Rivera, Frida Khalo, Rufino Tamayo, Maria Izquierdo, Guadalupe Posada will all have chairs created in their likenesses, with quotes and depictions of their more famous pieces incorporated into the seats' structures.

JANUARY 2000


Ippy N. Greer, San Jacinto College South
Looking to display "positive images reflecting our area and our educational concerns from the Arts to Technical subjects," Greer and the students at San Jacinto plan to employ their new Acrylic B 1000 package in the creation of a large student center mural. The colorful montage will contain a various assortment of paints, ranging from gesso to glossy to matte. The finished piece is set to be the center of attention at the school's open house in April. It is sure to catch the print and television media's eyes with its dazzling array of colors (Prism Violet, Prussian Blue, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalo Green and Alizarine Crimson, to name a few). In addition to enhancing their campus environment, the students hope this large mural will be an excellent addition to their growing portfolios.
