The following is the latest winner's submission for the Tip of the Month

NOVEMBER 2007

Adding Texture To Murals Or Walls
To obtain a wonderful textured surface to walls or buildings, paint a darker color first, like burnt umber or burnt sienna mixed with ultra marine blue. When dry, tape off the straight edges of the building and around windows, then take Liquitex Ceramic Stucco, mixed with a bit of white and raw umber and spread with a pallet knife, leaving some of he darker color showing through in spots. When the stucco has dried overnight, lightly mist with water and stain causing drips and layers of color. I use more raw umber, thin layers of ultramarine blue and some dioxazine purple mixed with a touch of raw umber to soften it. The effect of the stucco is a water color look which is amazing.

Do you have a studio tip to share with Liquitex users everywhere?
Have you found a more efficient way of doing something? How about a unique technique? Perhaps you'd like to share the unexpected results of an experimental session? Let us know!

Tips can be general studio suggestions, mixed media, experimental, etc., but should not be specifically related to oil painting techniques. Every month we will publish the best Tip we have received, its author's name and hometown, and he/she will receive a $50 value package that will include the Acrylic Book and some Liquitex product as our way of saying thank you.
