Tell us a bit about who you are as an artist, and what you do.

As both of my parents are artists, my home has always been a hub of artistry. Painting was a natural path for me, and despite my inspiration coming from a lot of momentous religious art, my creativity has manifested in a kind of pop art style.

Where does your subject matter choice come from?

I paint what I’m thinking – whether that’s coherent or not! My craziest ideas can inspire my best work. I’ve combined cartoons, catholic iconography, aliens, Aztec gods, animal/human hybrids all in the same work before. They live in the same room in my mind, so together they live on the canvas.

What art do you most identify with?

I guess it’s quite obvious that I get a lot of my inspiration from the fathers of Pop Art; but I also look to Spanish religious art for a starting off point. I love Tintoretto, El Greco and Murillo mostly.

Let us know about your personal artistic style, and how you work.

I can be quite obsessive sometimes. If I start painting while listening to a particular song and it’s going well, I don’t skip a track until the work is complete, because I have a feeling it will go wrong if I do. I’ve got the same attitude to my materials, too. I use the same Liquitex brushes, the same Liquitex paints, and the same erasers for every work.

What is integral to the work of an artist?

Trends, fashions and styles come and go; but you’ve got to be honest with yourself. Try everything, but if it’s not for you, don’t feel compelled to stick with it. It’s what will make you unique, in the end.
