Artists Features

To celebrate our 60th anniversary, Liquitex is selecting a Diamond Artist every month throughout 2015! As well as receiving a Liquitex care package tailored specifically to their artistic style, we’re showcasing their work on our website and Facebook page.

Meet our Liquitex Diamond Artist for July, Manhattan’s Tommy The Animator! In this feature, he shares his artistic style and metropolitan inspiration. Find out how you can use Liquitex Professional Soft Body and Paint Marker to achieve a similar effect here.

“I’m known as Tommy The Animator, partly because of my love for 2D and 3D animation, but also because animation plays a significant role in my acrylic painting.

I grew up on Manhattan's Upper Westside and have been drawing and creating as long as I can remember. Growing up in 80s Manhattan, hip hop was just taking form and a lot of the guys in my neighborhood were very integrated in the building of that subculture. Working as a tattoo artist, I fell in love with hip hop and the many forms of expression it had to offer. Now, in light of the turmoil going on in the world, I like to paint a better picture of it.

If I had to label my style, I’d call it Quantum Cubism; it’s a mixture of cubism, surrealism, the science of life and my personality. It pops off the canvas and allows me to give the viewer different angles and dynamics in a single, 2D image. The backgrounds in my artworks are gritty and warm and I explore real-life themes, often figuratively.

I build concepts off the diversity that surrounds me, but I never go into a painting with a solid intention. I try not to get caught up in creative hurdles, although they are impossible to avoid. I just let the feeling take over and become a part of the canvas. If I lose harmony in the creative process, I set it aside and come back to it when I get that feeling for it again. It has led me to spend more time on each piece now.”
