Mekia uses vivid color combinations and bold shapes in her work to explore themes of time, identity, memory, and sense of self as it relates to loss and trauma as a part of daily life: “I’m making a lot of work around sort of sense of self. Not just the body, but like what’s inside if we didn’t have like this sort of body to separate us from what’s directly outside, which is like the space. I’ve been making work that sort of plays with that space, that sort of in between space."
