We've reimagined the traditional gouache, using Liquitex innovation to bring you a new paint with the extra benefits of an acrylic. Intense color, flat, matte effects, smooth, permanent with no brush marks and no need to dilute.

Extreme Color

Think of gouache, think of saturated color. And ours packs a punch. The technology inside is complex, taking two years in the lab to develop. The innovative formula has a super-concentration of pure, ultra-fine pigments dispersed evenly in a flexible acrylic vehicle. It contains the highest intensity of pigment in any of our paints, giving you serious color payoff every time.

Flat & Matte

Gouache is traditionally the go-to for flat, matte results. Our Acrylic Gouache formula is no exception, giving you solid matte color without reflections or brush strokes. Because it doesn’t reflect the light, it’s perfect for scanning and mixing with digital effects – making it ideal for illustration and design work.

High Opacity

Acrylic Gouache pushes the opacity of each color to its limits. Gouache is traditionally known for its solid color, as well as its tendency to crack when dry. The two attributes go hand in hand, so when designing our Acrylic Gouache we looked at the problem differently. We set out to ensure you get the flexibility and smooth application you expect from an acrylic, with the best opacity possible. Each color was developed individually and we spent a lot of time very carefully choosing and balancing the type of pigment, the amounts used, and the particle size distribution. The result is a full range of opaque and semi-opaque colors, giving you the best possible combination of opacity versus flexibility, with minimum show-through.

A lasting, crack-free finish. Due to the high level of pigment, most gouaches can crack when drying. Ours sets a new benchmark. The acrylic vehicle brings flexibility to the paint film, giving you a reliable, non-cracking finish. See our gouache on the right, shown against a regular acrylic gouache.

Other gouaches need water to ease their way. Our acrylic gouache gives you a creamy, fluid texture with superb brushout, straight from the bottle. Application feels effortless and flowing, with no drag - making it perfect for large area coverage or fine detail. And because you don’t need to add water, your colors keep their true vibrancy.

On a client’s wall. In a gallery. Your work needs to stay as you intended. As with all Liquitex products, the pigments in Acrylic Gouache have passed extensive tests for lightfastness. Each pigment is rated according to the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), and we only use pigments rated ASTM I or II*. This means your work will have the greatest archival permanence possible – at least 50 years+ in gallery conditions – with no color shifting or fading, to stay vibrant and true.

*Some pigments, such as fluorescents, are not rated

Acrylic Gouache FAQs

Other artists have asked us...

  • If I mix fluorescent colors together, will they still be fluorescent?
Fluorescents have a great visual impact when combined, though the mixes will not be fluorescent
  • I see a lightfastness rating of NR on the fluorescent and iridescent colors. What does this mean?
For lightfastness, NR means “Not rated” – meaning that it has not been tested by ASTM for lightfastness. ASTM D4303 is the test method for Lightfastness for pigment-based artist materials. Fluorescent dyes and color coated micas are not usually in scope for this test as they are not real pigments with Color Index as such. Fluorescent colors by their very nature are dye based, they are known to be fugitive and cannot withstand the negative effects of UV light like most pigments.  This pertains to all fluorescent colors and has nothing to do with a professional or student range of art materials. We do our own in-house Blue wool test for Permanence rating where we test all our colors.
  • Do I need to add water to Acrylic Gouache (like I do with other brands) to make it flow?
No. Unlike most gouache paints, we have formulated all the Liquitex Acrylic Gouache colors individually to ensure they are uniformly smooth and fluid, without needing diluting to give the glide and feel you want.
  • I’ve got a new bottle of your Acrylic Gouache, can I change the nozzle width to get a different result?
Yes, you can cut down the Liquitex Acrylic Gouache nozzle to make the width wider - we have designed it with added cut marks to help you. Use a craft knife and cut it at an angle.
  • My regular gouache often cracks when I’ve applied it – will your Acrylic Gouache?
This is one of the traditional and unwanted features of gouache that we set out to change with the new Liquitex Acrylic Gouache formulation. When compared with other gouaches, ours remains measurably more crack-free and flexible.
