Isolation and memory are themes currently being explored by our first 2021 resident artist Mekia Machine. Born in Jamaica, Mekia grew up in Queens NYC and now lives with her two daughters in Harlem. The artist uses a range of media to document cultures where loss is a substantial part of daily life, and has had work shown at the White House as part of a undergraduate competition supported by Michelle Obama. “This opportunity means access to art materials, space and time. I intend to continue making works that grapple with memory and identity, as well as documenting the moments of grave disconnection and misremembering during - and as a result of - the pandemic.”
