KATE EGGLESTON, MANUFACTURER'S VILLAGE
Meet Kate Eggleston, our latest Liquitex resident creative. Kate is a multidisciplinary artist and educator, mainly focused on textiles, sculpture and works on paper. Threads of folk stories, childhood memories and chickens run through her current work. She relies heavily on process and repetition, which manifests as sewn and drawn multiples.
In the Liquitex studio Kate focused on monoprinting and textile work. Spot her feathery chicken leg colander inspired by the Eastern European Baba Yaga story, and meaty tree stump repeats. “Mixing humor with discomfort gives me comfort and is very satisfying as an artist.”
Sustainability is also an important part of Kate’s practice, particularly choice of materials “I do my best to source in a way that I'm not purchasing new. I’ll trade someone for fabric: sometimes I’ve used my own clothing, my mother's tablecloths, and that all makes me feel better about wasting less. I’ve also been using Bio-Based for fabric painting and printing: the heavy pigmentation and opacity are wonderful.”
Kate experimented with our pro Silkscreen Medium in the studio, using it mainly with the thick rich texture of Bio-Based and Soft Body. “The medium created a really nice flow for printing, as well as keeping the pigment opacity and increasing the dry time so that I could really work the monoprints as long as I needed.”
Advice for artists just starting out? “Try everything. Experiment. Make good work. Make bad work. Don't limit yourself. Try every process that you can so you can find your voice.”
