Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?
- Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.
Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:
- Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
- Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
- Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
- Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Other creatives have asked us...
WHERE CAN I USE LIQUITEX MARKERS?
Liquitex Markers are designed to work on virtually any surface. Use them on: Canvas, Paper and cardboard, Wood, Glass, Metal, Plastic, Fabric, Stone, Walls and murals. For the best results, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of oils or dust.
ARE LIQUITEX MARKERS PERMANENT?
Liquitex Markers are water-based and designed for versatility across a wide range of surfaces and materials. They offer longlasting, permanent results on porous surfaces like wood, textiles and certain plastics and metals with no sealant required. For nonporous surfaces we recommend applying a sealant or fixative to ensure durability and prevent damage over time.
ARE LIQUITEX MARKER NIBS REPLACEABLE?
Liquitex nibs are long lasting for consistent line quality and like-new shape from start to finish.
HOW SHOULD LIQUITEX MARKERS BE STORED?
For best results, store your Liquitex Markers vertically in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Replace caps after each use and ensure the caps are tightly sealed to prevent drying out.
ARE LIQUITEX MARKERS NON-TOXIC?
Yes.
WHO CAN USE LIQUITEX MARKERS?
Liquitex Markers are for all creative needs, all levels, all surfaces: home and work, hobbies and art. Creativity on point.
DO LIQUITEX MARKERS NEED TO BE SHAKEN OR PRIMED BEFORE USE?
Yes. Before using your marker, Shake the marker well with the cap on to mix the paint. Then, press the nib down gently on scrap paper until the paint flows. This activates the valve system and ensures consistent paint flow.
CAN THE MARKER NIBS BE REVERSED?
Yes. The 8mm and 15mm markers feature reversible nibs, allowing you to switch between different edge shapes depending on your mark-making needs. The 8mm features both a bullet and a chisel nib. The 15mm has a dual-sided chisel nib. Simply remove the nib, flip it, and reinsert it to use the alternate edge.
CAN I LAYER COLORS WITH LIQUITEX MARKERS?
Yes. Because they use acrylic paint, colors can be layered once the previous layer has dried. This allows you to build up opacity, create highlights, or add fine details over painted areas.
MY LIQUITEX MARKER STOPPED FLOWING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
If paint flow slows or stops, first shake the marker again to remix the paint. Then, prime the nib by pressing it down on scrap paper. Always make sure the cap has been securely closed between uses. If the nib has dried paint on it, you can gently wipe it with a damp cloth before priming again.
THE PAINT FROM MY LIQUITEX MARKER IS COMING OUT TOO WET. HOW CAN I FIX THIS?
If the marker releases too much paint, avoid pressing the nib too hard when priming. Test the flow on scrap paper first before applying to your artwork. Always store markers horizontally to maintain balanced paint distribution. Once the excess paint has flowed through the nib, the marker should return to normal control.
MY LIQUITEX MARKER NIB LOOKS CLOGGED OR DIRTY. CAN I CLEAN IT?
Yes. If the nib becomes clogged or picks up pigment from other colors or surfaces, remove the nib carefully and rinse it with clean water until the paint loosens. Allow it to dry slightly, then reinsert and reprime the marker. Cleaning the nib can help restore smooth paint flow and prevent color contamination.
MY LIQUITEX MARKER DRIED OUT. CAN IT BE SAVED?
If the cap was left off and the nib has dried, Try removing the nib and rinsing it with water to soften any dried paint. Then, reinsert the nib and prime the marker again. Because the markers contain acrylic paint, keeping the cap tightly closed when not in use helps prevent drying.
