Our metallic paints are made with special pigments. These have usually been treated with aluminum or mica to help us create a unique reflective effect. We then suspend the pigments in our usual acrylic binder, then tint each formula to produce the color we’re after.

Like the rest of our range, we buy our metallic pigments from our expert pigment suppliers. We specialize in making paint, they specialize in making raw pigments. It involves a host of chemical processes to make all kinds of pigments, including metallic ones - from grinding, milling, precipitation, solvent baths, drying… I could go on!

Because of the treatments the effect pigments have had, I wouldn’t term them ‘fine art’ pigments. But they do behave in a similar way to the fine art pigments we use in the rest of our range - with high durability and stability. The lightfastness is ‘not rated’ so we can’t guarantee they will stay as vivid as our non-metallic paints.

Treat it like the rest of your acrylic work. Being an acrylic formula, it’s durable and likes to be varnished when dry to dial up its vibrancy and make it more protected from bumps and knocks.

No – treat it like a regular Liquitex
paint. Basics Acrylic metallic formulas don’t separate when left on the shelf
which means you don’t need to shake them before use. However, our Basics
Acrylic Fluids DO need shaking before use, as the pigments can settle at the
bottom.  

Yes. We have worked hard to
achieve a similar smooth consistency across the color spectrum, so you can use
them exactly as you do with regular colors.

Yes! As with all our materials, from Bio-Based to Spray Paint, you can layer, blend, mix and combine Basics metallics with any other Liquitex format and make something unique to you.
