STEP 1

GATHER SUPPLIES AND TAPE DOWN SQUARES

Assemble the four, six-inch squares of smooth paper into a larger square on a flat surface. Use the masking tape to tape the squares to each other and the surface. Where the squares connect with each other, overlap the width of the tape equally on each side. Use the same amount of overlap around the perimeter of the square pieces.

Also, make sure each of your Markers has been shaken and primed by gently depressing the nib until the color flows to the base of the nib.

STEP 2

APPLYING SOME BACKGROUND COLOR

Squeeze a small amount of the Bright Aqua Green Soft Body color onto the scrap paper or palette paper. Dip the dry, one-inch paddle brush into some of the Bright Aqua Green.

Make quick, energetic dry brush strokes of paint across all four of the squares. Feel free to paint over the masking tape as well. Be sure to apply the color very lightly and allow the brush texture to show through. This will add a nice texture contrast with the Markers.

Since dry brush technique is used, it should dry within a minute or two

STEP 3

MAKE LARGE MARKS

Take either the 15mm Bright Pink or Orange Marker, and apply some large and loose marks in all four squares. Repeat with the other 15mm Marker.

For this step, use the largest part of the nib to make the marks. Don’t worry too much about placement or composition yet. Just get some color and marks down on the paper.

Again, don’t feel bound by the masking tape edges. Draw across all four sections without considering the tape.

STEP 4

ADD SHAPE AND LINES

Take the 8mm Red and Yellow Markers and add some unique and visually interesting shapes. The chisel nibs in the 8mm are nice for marks that go from thick to thin in a short stroke, as well as calligraphic line work. The wide part of the nib allows for filling shapes easily as well.

Have fun as these marks are applied. Twist the Marker during application, or press firmly and release quickly, for example. Experiment with as many different types of lines and shapes the Markers can create.

In this stage, take a moment to place the shapes in the spaces of the squares. Put some inside the square, and some on the edge of the design for variety.

STEP 5

SMALLER SHAPES AND LINES

Take a 2mm color, like the Light Blue, and make some delicate line work to contrast and complement the larger marks.

If you make groupings of the smaller lines, consider that a shape and consider repeating that grouping in other areas in the squares. As before, feel free to go over the edge/onto the tape.

The 2mm Black is fun to outline shapes or create more dramatic shapes. The 2mm White Marker will easily cover darker value colors like black. All of the Markers should be quite opaque in one coat, but if you want to ensure full opacity, do a second coat once the first marks are touch dry.

STEP 6

EVALUATE AND PEEL THE TAPE

Take a moment to check the composition using the questions from the TIP in Step 4. Add any additional marks or shapes as desired.

Consider taking a Marker used in the first layer of the piece and add a few dabs on top of the finer line work.

Once it looks good to you, carefully peel the tape. Peel the tape slowly at a 45-degree angle to the perimeter of the square. This will minimize the chance of tearing the paper.

STEP 7

CREATE THE COLLECTION

There are now four pieces that can be moved into various groupings. Play with different ways to put them together and change the orientation of the squares.

For example, pick your favorite three squares, and put them in a line to create a triptych, turning the pieces to create a visual flow between them.
