Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?

  • Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.

Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:

  • Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
  • Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
  • Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
  • Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.

ARCHIVAL

On a client’s wall. In a gallery. Your work needs to stay as you intended. As with all Liquitex products, the pigments in Soft Body have passed extensive tests for lightfastness.

Each pigment is rated according to the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), and we only use pigments rated ASTM I or II*. This means your work will have the greatest archival permanence possible – at least 50 years+ in gallery conditions – with no color shifting or fading, to stay vibrant and true.

*Some pigments, such as fluorescents, are not rated vibrant and true.

THE FORMULA

If you thought Soft Body was just a watered down Heavy Body, you'd be wrong. This flowing low viscosity formula was actually created first. The two paints have compatible binders and pack the same high pigment load. But if you thin Heavy Body with water or mediums, you reduce concentration and get noticably weaker colors. Paint feel, performance and stability is also impacted, so choose the right consistency of paint for the job.

VERSATILITY

If you had to choose one paint – this would be the one you’d get most out of. Soft Body suits a wide range of techniques and applications. It loves almost any surface and dries flexibly and quickly for easy layering and masking. Want something new? Use a professional medium to change its character further.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Other creatives have asked us...

I cut the nozzle on my Soft Body or Acrylic Gouache too far down -can I get another one from you?

You can't get replacement nozzles for Liquitex Soft Body; but can use a nozzle from another bottle.

What's the best extender for Soft Body?

It depends what kind of finish you want. Ultra Matte Medium will double your volume without changing the viscosity, color position or opacity, but will give a matte finish. Alternatively Gloss and Medium Mediums will keep the viscosity but increase transparency a little.

Is it true that Soft Body was the first acrylic paint ever invented?

Yes it's true that it was the first commercially available water-based acrylic paint designed for artists, back in the 1950s. Then it was called Liquitex Medium Viscosity.

I used to be able to buy your Soft Body paint in either a tube or pot can I still get it in a tube?

The older Soft Body packaging in tubes has been discontinued.

Do the new big Soft Body bottles also come with nozzles?

Large Soft Body bottles also have nozzle lids, except for tiny sample sizes.

Can I get the same consistency and result as Soft Body by watering down my Heavy Body paint?

You can thin Heavy Body paint with water, but it may reduce color intensity. We would always advise that you'll get the result by choosing the appropriate paint for the task.
